Wellness Pet Products
Wellness has never recalled a pet food for contamination or harmful ingredients
In 2007 Wellness voluntarily recalled a cat food because they felt it was lacking nutrition, refunding owners and ensuring that their pets received adequate nutrition in the next production. No harmful ingredients were present.
A policy of "no empty ingredient" which is supported by their ingredient list and disturbers.
Wellness is one of the few manufacturers that actually tests it's products prior to distribution. In addition they continue randomized tests of each batch for quality assurance.
Orijen Pet Foods
Orijen has never recalled a pet for harmful ingredients.
In March 2008 fish bones from the 'de-boned' salmon variety were found due to a mechanical error in the de-boning process. No animals were reported harmed, however owners were instructed to return the damaged food for a full refund.
Orijen believes that our pets eat meat in the while, so they should eat only meat in their pet food. Each Orijen product contains little to no grains and is considered to meet the standards of a 'natural diet'.
Orijen only uses organic, human grade ingredients for all of it's products.
"From free-run poultry, to wild-caught fish to free-range red meats, our regional ingredients are approved 'fit for human consumption' by the Government of Canada and arrive at our door fresh each day — so they’re preservative free and bursting with goodness to nourish your dog or cat completely." -Orijen.com
Researching Pet Food
The internet is your best source of information when it comes to deciding on products for your pets. When in doubt read the ingredients and decide if you would it what is listed yourself. If you don't know what an ingredient then look it up on the internet to help you decide if it is something you should consume. There are helpful websites around to help you evaluate different products. The following are links to reputable websites that can help you and your pet live happy lives together.
A great website that offers in depth analysis and review of hundreds of major dog food brands. The easy to read format and rating system can help any pet owner decide which dog foods to avoid.
This website is an excellent resource for recalls. It is also sadly a place where owners of poisoned pets come to share their stories and the things they learned in the process. They also offer a service that research pet foods for you (at a cost) and sends you e-mail with up to the minute recall information.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals [PETA]
This site may not be for everyone. It is very graphic in nature, but also offer raw, factual information about the awful treatment of animals. If there is a major issue harming animals, you can bet PETA will have a wealth of information on it.
*Note. Be careful which sites you choose to glean information from. It is a known fact that large pet food companies create their own review sites filled with false reviews and recommendations.
