Simmons Pet food, Inc
Simmon's Pet Food, Inc is the largest pet food producer in the United States. They supply pet food to 9 of the top 10 and 35 of the top 40 North American food retailers. A sub-division of this company was responsible for the largest pet food recall in the history of the United States. Over 100 brands of dog and cat food were contaminated with rat poison and led to death or illness for thousands of pets in the US. The FDA reported over 17,000 cases of poisoning death, of that 17,000 it is expected less than 30% of actual cases were actually reported.
FDA Involvement
The FDA is an agency of the US Department of Health and Human Services. The FDA is reponsible for protecting and promoting public health through regulation and supervision of food safety, dietary supplements, prescriptions, vaccines, cosmetics, and many others. One misconception by most pet owners is that pet food is monitored just the same as human food. This is false. "There is no requirement that pet food products have pre-market approval by the FDA". The FDA is only concerned with pet foods when they are so toxic, so deadly, that they pose a direct threat to humans that come into contact with them. For this reason the majority of the 998 current pet food recalls are voluntary.
